After seven weeks, the Chindits closed the block and marched north. Lime was dropped by air because the stench of dead men and mules in the heat became overwhelming. There was constant shelling and enemy snipers were up in the trees or hidden underground. The Japanese attacked in strength day and night. They were supplied by airdrops and the block became known as “White City”, because of the hundreds of parachutes draped across the trees. ![]() ![]() There they built a fortified area, surrounded by a barbed wire barrier.
